Founded in 1851 as the first chartered institution of higher education in California,
University of the Pacific prepares students for professional and personal success through
rigorous academics, scholarships, research, and engaging culture. The University offers
more than 80 undergraduate majors and 40 graduate programs across nine schools and
colleges. Since 1955, University of the Pacific’s Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy has
been training graduates who are problem-solvers, innovators, and leaders. The pharmacy
school offers Bachelors (BS), Masters (MS), and Doctoral degrees (PharmD, PhD, and
PharmD/PhD).
The MS and PhD in Pharmaceutical and Chemical Sciences programs (PCSP) prepare
industry ready graduates and is the only such program in the Western United States. There
are five major focus areas: i) Bioanalytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, and
Biochemistry, ii) Biopharmaceutical Sciences, iii) Chemical Synthesis, Drug Discovery and
Design, iv) Health Care Outcomes and Clinical Services, v) Molecular-Cellular physiology
and Pharmacology. These five focus areas bring together collaborative research and
innovation from three different departments with more than 25 years of continuous
NIH/NSF and other federal and state funding resulting in numerous publications in high
impact journals.
The Master of Science (MS) in PCSP offers meaningful career opportunities such as a
quality control analyst, formulation scientist, junior clinical researcher, regulatory affairs
specialist, or chemist. The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in PCSP opens up additional
pathways to begin independent research and development or lead in senior positions.
Many of these graduates work in industry or laboratories studying biological and chemical
processes as biochemists or biophysicists.
