St. Paul University Philippines (SPUP), founded on May 10, 1907, by the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres, is a historic institution that has evolved from Colegio de San Pablo to its current status as a leading university. It has been a pioneer in education, becoming the first Teacher-Training Institution in Cagayan Valley and later the first Catholic University in the region in 1982. SPUP is recognized for its innovative and global approach to education, being the first private Catholic university in Asia to receive an ISO 9001 Certification by TUV Rheinland in 2000. It is also accredited by the Asian Association of Schools of Business International (AASBI) since 2014 and was selected by the World Bank as a Knowledge for Development Center (KDC). SPUP has been honored for its online presence and social media use, ranking 38th by WURI on Ethical Value and among the Top 101-200 Innovative Universities globally in 2021. SPUP's internationalization efforts have been noted, with CHED designating it as one of the 12 participating schools in the ASEAN International Mobility for Students (AIMS) program. It won the Third Prize in the First Philippine Higher Education Internationalization Award in 2021. The university is also recognized for its sustainable development efforts, being an affiliate of UNESCO's Associated Schools Project Network (ASPNet) and awarded as the Most Environment-Friendly and Sustainable School in Region II by the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB). SPUP's community development initiatives have been acknowledged by DSWD as the Best Non-Government Organization in Luzon in 2019. Culturally, SPUP is identified as a Catholic Center for Culture by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines and was awarded a Historical Marker by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines. It is also a Regional Arts Center, designated by the Cultural Center of the Philippines. SPUP is an Autonomous Institution by CHED, with Centers of Excellence in Nursing and Teacher Education, and is recognized for its student services and research library. The School of Medicine is listed in WHO's World Directory of Medical Schools.
